Become a Computer programmer!
If you have a copy of Microsoft Office on your computer at home, you may not realise that it includes a powerful programming language (VBA) that you can learn and then create programs to make your data processing easier. A proposed class for 2009/2010 targets people who are comfortable using the spreadsheet Excel and want to make the computer do some of the data entry / processing / reporting that they otherwise must do manually. The Sandbach webmaster - Kevin Dean - learnt VBA with Cheshire Police and used it to report on crime & disorder. He will guide you through the learning process and suggest programs that you might create to amaze your friends.
Participants will buy their own copy of a self study book and Kevin will guide them through the learning process that they will follow on their own home computer. He will then suggest programs for them to write. Kevin will provide support mainly by phone and email and will supply a large reference collection of examples taken from his police work and programs he has written for home use..

A Climate Change Group
Since the newsletter was produced another group has been proposed for the next U3A year. Dave Whitworth is the guiding hand behind the new group and he describes the new group as follows:
If mankind induced global warming is as serious as most scientists are saying, this is probably the greatest challenge our grandchildren will face. This group will seek to form a view on how serious it really is, and what we as individuals, or as a community can do about it. For example, on a personal level what is our carbon footprint made up of, and how can we achieve reductions? On a community level, what would it take for Sandbach to be carbon neutral, and how could we contribute?
