Walking Long Programme

LONG WALKING GROUP – PROGRAMME 2011/2012

With the exception of the December walk all walks take place on the third Wednesday of each month.

The meeting point for all walks is Lower Waitrose Car Park ready to leave at 9.00 a.m

(until further notice, this may be subject to change due to local parking arrangements!).

Walk Leaders vary – please refer to the individual walk information for details.

The U3A walk fee is 50p per walker per walk.

You are advised to have a good pair of walking boots or strong shoes, waterproof clothing, food and a drink.  At the very least please carry lunch, a cold drink in hot weather and a hot drink when it is cold.  The leader carries a basic first aid kit, but may not be currently trained.

Please keep to the pace set by the leader that will be governed by the slowest in the party. Please do not go in front of the leader or leave the walk without informing the leader.  If you experience any difficulty on the walk please inform the leader at once.

Many of the walks cross farmland therefore mud and stiles can be expected; dogs are not allowed.  The leader reserves the right to alter or curtail any walk according to the prevailing circumstances.

Please bring shoes to change into if you are wanting a lift.

21st September 2011 – Bosley Locks, North Rode and Gawsworth.  This moderately easy walk of 8.5 miles includes a stretch of the Macclesfield Canal featuring the 12 locks of the Bosley Staircase.  Walking will be on paths, farm tracks and country lanes as well as the canal towpath and one short stretch of the A54.   Leader: Bill Fowler. 01477 532774

19th October 2011 – The walk starts with a stroll around the Bosley Reservoir and then into the serious meat of this walk as you climb to the massive concrete telecoms tower on Sutton Common.  The rest of the walk visits abandoned farms up and down the area between Bosley and Wincle before the welcome downhill walk back to Bosley.  The walk is about 9.5 miles long and includes glorious views and mud.     Leader: Kevin Dean. 01270 765529

16th November 2011 .Poynton and Marple Lakes. This walk includes stretches of the Peak Forest and Macclesfield Canals and a section of the Middlewood Way as well as a little used path across Lyme Park.  The lunch stop will be the cafe at Marple Lakes. Approximately 10 miles of mainly easy walking on tracks, canal side paths and minor roads.             Leader: Bill Fowler. 01477 532774

14th December 2011 – Pre-Christmas ramble with Geoff. An easy walk of approx 8 miles.          Leader: Geoff Harrop. 01270 583673

18th January 2012 – Weaver Navigation – An easy/moderate walk of approx 9 miles which includes both sides of the River Weaver between Vale Royal Locks and Northwich and goes past the edge of Moulton.              Leader: Bill Fowler. 01477 532774

15th February 2012 – Bickerton and Bulkeley Hills incorporating Rawhead and Maiden Castle along the Sandstone trail. An undulating walk of 8 miles.         Leader: Geoff Harrop. 01270 583673

21st March 2012 – From Teggs Nose this walk goes through Macclesfield Forest to Forest Chapel and Lamaload Reservoir.  This is a fairly strenuous walk  with several climbs and descents and some mud!     Leader: Geoff Harrop. 01270 583673

18th April 2012 – The Wrekin.   Starting from Little Wenlock along the Shropshire Way, then via Little Hill and ascending to The Wrekin.  The walk continues to Wrekin Cottage, then descends through Wenlocks Wood and Gibbons Coppice, back to the Shropshire Way and back into Little Wenlock. 16th May 2012 – A “Spring Colours” walk from Rushton Spencer, via Hawksley Farm, Gig Hall, Wincle Grange, Whitelee, Gig Hall, Dane Valley Way, Staffordshire Way. Approx 8.5 miles of moderate walking with an early ascent.        Leader: Bill Fowler. 01477 532774

20th June 2012 --  Mind the …… bikes!!  A walk taking in part of the Monsal Trail and some of the recently opened Tunnels.    Leader: Paul Billington. 

18th July 2012 – Starting from Youlgreave this walk takes in Anthony Hill, Elton and Robin Hood’s Stride.  A moderate walk of approx 9.5 miles. Leader: Ralph Browes. 01270 764281

15th August 2012 – Pickmere - An easy/moderate walk of about 9 miles, starting from Great Budworth, through the Arley Estate and round Pickmere, using mainly fields and tracks.  Tea room and ice cream at end of walk highly recommended!        Leader: Sheila Jessup. 01477 537905

The first walk of the 2012-2013 programme will be on 18th September 2012.
