Members of the Sandbach and District U3A Wine Tasting Group meet monthly throughout the year to sample wines from around the world. Numbers need to be limited to no more than ten per group, since the meetings take place in the less-than-palatial surroundings of the Leader’s home. We taste (or rather drink!) about six wines per evening. The wines are chosen against various criteria (grape variety, country of origin, particular supplier etc.) Information on the origins and production of the wines is provided and sometimes discussed. Occasionally we amuse ourselves with blind tastings. These allow everyone to demonstrate the range of their knowledge (or the lack of it!). The cost of each evening varies (according to numbers present and the prices of the wines sampled), but is usually in the region of £6-£7 per person. The leader’s home is less than 100 yards from a bus stop on the Crewe to Macclesfield (#38) route. Parking is available (free of charge!), but driving is (mildly!) discouraged, since we all wish to enjoy our wine responsibly. Meetings are informal and, since wine is involved, tend to be friendly and fairly chatty! Most importantly, we all realise that the tastes and preferences of people vary. There are no right or wrong answers in wine tasting!
